Un antico borgo di pescatori sulle rive orientali del lago di Como

Il borgo, con le sue coloratissime case, è arroccato al monte dominato dalle rovine del  castello di Vezio. Dall’imbarcadero costeggiando il lago a destra si percorre la panoramica “Passeggiata degli Innamorati” che porta al centro del paese.

An ancient fishing village on the eastern shores of Lake Como

The peaceful town with its colourful houses is graciously woven into the mountain landscape dominated by the ruins of the Castello di Vezio. From the boat dock to the right a romantic walk way called “Lover’s Lane” leads to the centre.

 

Varenna vanta ville grandiose delle quali è possibile visitare i giardini con suggestivi cipressi e rare essenze mediterranee come Villa Monastero e Villa Cipressi.

The town hosts beautiful villas with manicured gardens like Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi.

Villa Monastero si è sviluppata sull’antico monastero cistercense femminile di S. Maria, fondato probabilmente prima del 1200, dopo che l’Isola Comacina fu distrutta dai Comaschi. Nel 1567 il convento fu soppresso e  nel 1645 venne trasformato in una villa di grande pregio e signorilità.

Nel 2003 la villa è divenuta sede museale. Il parco che costeggia il lago è lungo più di un chilometro: fioritissime aiuole disposte lungo i vialetti che degradano verso il lago, gli alti cipressi, le fiorenti palme e le altre piante esotiche, danno vita ad uno spettacolare paesaggio che vede la villa al centro di un leggiadro giardino con statue e bassorilievi.

 

Villa Monastero, as the name indicates,  was a Cistercian convent dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen. It was probably founded before 1200, after the destruction of the Island Comacina, by the Comaschi during the war between Milan and Como. In 1567, the convent was dissolved and in 1645 was completely changed into a splendid abode.

In 2003 the villa became a museum. The villa stands in a magnificent park where citrus, cypresses, pine trees and agaves grow and stretch over more than a kilometre. Statues and bas-reliefs can be admired along the paths among the numerous Mediterranean and tropical plants.

 

Meritevoli sono anche i giardini di Villa Cipressi che si trovano vicino alla Villa Monastero.

Close to Villa Monastero stands the Villa Cipressi built with splendid botanical gardens.

Proseguendo la visita, arriviamo nella piazza principale, dove possiamo ammirare la Chiesa  di San Giorgio e poco oltre Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista.

Continuing our visit, we arrive in the main square, where we can admire the Church of San Giorgio and just beyond the Church of  San Giovanni Battista. 

La Chiesa di S. Giorgio, consacrata nel 1313, rappresenta un perfetto esempio di architettura lombarda del XIV secolo. Strutturata su tre navate, presenta sulla facciata un rosone e un affresco raffigurante S. Cristoforo. Di notevole bellezza sono gli affreschi interni.

The Church of S. Giorgio, consecrated in 1313, is a perfect example of Lombard architecture of the fourteenth century. Structured on three naves, it has on its façade a rose window and a fresco representing St. Christopher. Of particular beauty are the frescoes inside.

 

San Giovanni Battista è una delle più antiche Chiese del Lario ed è la Chiesa madre di Varenna. Risalente all’XI° secolo, conserva al suo interno successivi affreschi del XVI secolo. Il campanile romanico è costruito verso lago, come era consuetudine anticamente.

St. John the Baptist is one of the oldest churches of the Lake and is the mother church of Varenna. Dating back to the 11th century, it houses 16th century frescoes. The Romanesque bell tower is built towards the lake, as was customary in ancient times.

 

Si gode una bellissima vista dal Castello di Vezio, raggiungibile, salendo a piedi dall’imbarcadero in ca. 30 minuti. Il castello, risalente al 1300, ospita un centro di falconeria.  Da Vezio, un piccolo agglomerato di case costruite maggior parte in sasso, si può seguire il sentiero del Viandante, antica via di comunicazione, che in ca. 1.30 ora conduce a Bellano.

You can enjoy a beautiful view from the Vezio Castle, reachable on foot (uphill) from the ferry dock in approx. 30 minutes. The castle, dating back to 1300, houses a falconry center. From Vezio, a small group of houses built mostly in stone, you can follow the trail of the Wayfarer, an ancient way of communication, which in ca. 1.30 hour leads to Bellano.

Dopo tanto girovagare, una pausa “gustosa” è d’obbligo per poter assaggiare i tanti piatti locali come i missoltini in carpione, il risotto e filetto di pesce persico, la polenta, il lavarello, gli agoni, i formaggi e i dolci.

 

After so much wandering around, a “tasty” break is a must to savour the many local dishes such as missoltini in carpione, risotto and fillet of perch, lavarello, agoni, the different cheese and desserts.

 

Se poi voleste portare a casa qualche ricordo di questo bellissimo borgo, consiglio l’olio extravergine DOP, un olio di altissima qualità che ha ricevuto molti riconoscimenti, fra cui le “tre foglie” del Gamberi Rosso oppure il miele biologico, premiato al Concorso Nazionale Grandi Mieli di Italia.

If you would like to bring home some memories of this beautiful village, I recommend the extra virgin olive oil DOP, an oil of high quality that has received many awards, including the “three leaves” of the Gambero Rosso or the organic honey, awarded at the National Competition Great Honey of Italy.
